The 57-year-old Canadian-raised actor recently revealed that he gave a stunning 70% of his original “Matrix” paycheck to cancer research in honor of his younger sister.

Reeves was paid $10 million up front for the 1999 sci-fi flick, according to LAD Bible, and earned an extra $35 million over time. The philanthropic actor contributed a total of $31.5 million to leukemia research.

Kim, the actor’s sister, had been battling leukemia for the previous eight years. In 1991, she was diagnosed with cancer, and in 2001, she went into remission. Even after that happy day, Reeves continued to donate money to the cause, even establishing his own foundation to assist in generating more funding. To avoid attracting too much attention, the “John Wick” star kept his name distinct from the organization.

The List Goes On

According to the New York Post, Reeves auctioned off a 15-minute Zoom date with himself in 2020 and donated the funds to Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho summer camp for children with cancer. The prize was worth $19,000 to the winner.

It’s not the first time Reeves has forgone a portion of his “Matrix” income. According to ABC News, the actor agreed to give the special effects and costume design teams a percentage of the back-end income from the two “Matrix” sequels.

Reeves has also contributed a percentage of his pay to the production of films such as “Speed” and “The Replacements.” To work with acting veteran Gene Hackman, Reeves decided to take a pay cut. In order to get Al Pacino on board, he did the same thing with “Devil’s Advocate.”

Reeves is known in Hollywood for being gentle, courteous, and humble, with no ego like most other performers of his class. Fans also admire how he appears to be wary of fame and largely uninterested in it. It’s no surprise that everyone adores him.
