Is Reese Witherspoon Thinking About A Sweet Home Alabama Sequel?

Sweet Hone Alabama Sequel

The queen of rom-coms might as well be Reese Witherspoon. The actress has a long list of successful romantic comedies under her belt, including Legally Blonde and Four Christmases, but Sweet Home Alabama has become a fan favorite over time. Since its release in 2002, the film has drawn rom-com aficionados of all ages and has become something of a classic among them. Josh Lucas, who portrays the small-town love interest, recently opened out about the possibility of a sequel.

Lucas was questioned about a prospective sequel and whether Witherspoon would return to her legendary role in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Although he would really like to do another, his schedule might prevent it from happening. Josh Lucas clarified with this quote:

I would love to. I’ve campaigned her. I’m not gonna say that she’s the problem, but I think part of it is that Reese is so busy. … I really believe that — I’m assuming, I hope — she wants to be part of it. Carving out that piece of her life isn’t so easy for her. I don’t have the same responsibilities or time constraints, so I hope that she could find a time to do it. I’ll be there tomorrow.

We won’t give up hope just yet because there is obviously a lot of love and support for another movie, but there are many other projects the original cast is working on that might get in the way. Lucas noticed that Reese Witherspoon is particularly busy. A long list of future Hollywood productions, including Daisy Jones and the Six and Legally Blonde 3, are being worked on by her production business, Hello Sunshine. In addition to The Morning Show on AppleTV+ and the next live-action Tinker Bell movie, she is also starring in the Legally Blonde sequel.

Even though there are a ton of Reese Witherspoon projects to look forward to, We keep thinking there should be a Sweet Home Alabama sequel.
In the first movie, Witherspoon plays a New York fashion designer who marries Patrick Dempsey’s character, a respected bachelor. She cannot wed him, though, until her husband from high school, whom she wedded, consents to their divorce. When she returns to her hometown, she unintentionally finds herself rekindling an old romance. There might be enough fan support to make it happen because I know that viewers are eager to learn what happened to the couple after the credits rolled.

If there were to be a Sweet Home Alabama sequel, we might have to wait a bit, but if you want to watch it again, you can now rent it on Amazon Prime (opens in new tab). Check out our piece on some of CinemaBlend’s top rom-coms for more information on where to see some other rom-coms.
