‘Spiderman: No Way Home’ Breaks The Pandemic Curse

Best 2nd Day Ever Movie Opening

Best 2nd Day Ever

America loves them some Spidy! However, the guys who collect the data are estimating Sony/Spider-Man: Marvel’s No Way Home will gross $72M-$74M on Saturday, down -40% from its second best opening day ever of $121.5M, putting the Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch film at $250M or more. Wow.

Sony hasn’t confirmed the actual numbers, but don’t worry, there’s no trap door here in the weekend where a ton of money will be lost.
The Jon Watts-directed MCU sequel is on the verge of eclipsing 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War as the second-best domestic opening of all time, with $257.698M from Disney/Marvel.

Really Good News For The Movie Theaters

A strong indication that the power of the big screen will not be diminished by a pandemic: Ticket sales for all movies this weekend are expected to total $273.5 million, up 10% from two years ago when Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, the previous massive blockbuster, debuted before Covid. However, as previously stated, the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home is not a case of all boats rising. No Way Home is commanding 90 percent of the entire weekend’s ticket sales, compared to Rise of Skywalker, which had a $177.3M opening and represented 72 percent of the domestic B.O. from December 20-22, 2019. According to EntTelligence, Spider-Man accounted for 91 percent of all moviegoing attendance yesterday. On Friday, nine out of every ten moviegoers saw the webslinger. So far, the average theater has seen Sony’s biggest opener 37 times.

No Way Home has a running time of 2 hours and 28 minutes, demonstrating that long superhero movies during the pandemic continue to appeal to their core audience.
